LASER SCANNER – PORTABLE AND COMPACT SOLUTION FOR 3D SCANNING AND INSPECTION

The 3D laser scanner is a high-resolution metrology system that provides fast and accurate three-dimensional measurement data with high accuracy.
The mobile, portable solution for 3D scanning guarantees high acquisition speed, repeatability even by large volumes, and high measurement performance also on different (and non-collaborative) materials. These features make the 3D laser scanner applicable in various industries such as automotive, aeronautics, plastic molding, foundries, sheet metal molding. Furthermore, the laser scanner offers great flexibility and ergonomics and allows to activate different scanning modes depending on the inspection need and the characteristics of the part.

How does laser scanning work?

The laser scanner usually consists of two elements:

  • Sensor
  • Tracker

The sensor is a linear scanner that allows the digitization of object surfaces, using a laser beam and a 2D camera. Based on the line acquired in this way, the position of the individual points is calculated using the triangulation principle.

The tracker (through triangulation) geolocates the sensor at any time, allowing not only to eliminate errors due to repositioning, but at the same time offering the possibility of having one of the largest and most versatile scanning volumes.

The 3D laser scanning solutions offer maximum flexibility for a wide variety of applications and surfaces. They can be used on the shop floor and offer a fast, intuitive way to measure parts, analyze and create a digital twin.

The scanning output is an STL file that can be used for different activities such as:

  • Measurement: the STL file can be compared with the nominal file in CAD to highlight any deviations and nonconformities
  • Reverse Engineering: by scanning you can reconstruct the mathematical model of a finished piece

How does laser scanning work

Which are the advantages for the companies?

Companies need tools that allow them to perform dimensional control effectively and with precision, even on complex geometries. 3D laser scanning technology provides manufacturers with a valuable asset to capture data in minutes even on some of the most challenging surface types.

The 3D laser technology gives the possibility to scan quickly and extremely precisely even minute details of non-collaborative materials (such as sheet metal, plastic, and carbon fiber) without any part preparation.

Some of the advantages offered by 3D laser scanning are:

  • Scanning speed – quickly capture any physical object
  • Extreme measurement accuracy
  • Process efficiency and effectiveness (the 3D scanner algorithm automatically selects the best points of the scan, those that derive from the best positioning)
  • Very defined detail of the measurement obtained
  • Save time in design work

Applications

The most typical and advantageous applications of 3D laser scanning are those that include part measurement (for Quality Control) or Reverse Engineering to highlight deviations of the finished part from the nominal in CAD.

The accuracy of the 3D survey also allows performing virtual assemblies of the scanning results.

The 3D scanning technology can also be used for applications of:

  • Quality control / verification
  • Realization of tools and molds
  • Design
  • Rapid manufacturing
  • Archeology, documentation of historical and artistic objects, etc.
